The OPAL-120 is planned as a rugged, multi-purpose LiDAR sensor specifically designed for applications in harsh environments.
Based on an innovative sensor concept that uses spinning prisms and our patented obscurant-penetrating technology, the OPAL-120 is a versatile and powerful situational awareness sensor for machine automation applications, as well as object detection and tracking for navigation and perimeter security applications. The OPAL-120 series of scanners is suitable for applications where a forward looking field-of-view is required.
OPAL 2.0 sensors are designed for the punishing conditions typical of off-road vehicles used in the mining, oil and gas, and construction industries as well as for industrial security applications. The sensor is environmentally sealed (IP67) with no externally moving parts, has a -40⁰ to +65⁰C operating temperature range achieved with no fans or heaters for improved reliability, and is ruggedized to withstand significant vibration and shock levels. It delivers an unprecedented combination of range, data density, acquisition speed and obscurant penetrating capability – all packaged for harsh environments. Various performance options are available depending on your specific application needs and budget.
OPAL-120 scanners produce a unique non-overlapping scan pattern that can generate very dense 3D data sets in seconds even when stationary (no data gaps).
But for many real-time applications such as autonomous navigation or surveillance, actionable information can be derived from sparse data and there is no need to collect and more importantly process large amounts of point cloud data. Our OPAL scanners can be configured to collect sparse data sets sufficient for change detection and can then seamlessly switch to collecting more high-resolution data should something of interest be detected in the data. Alternatively, the scanner can use non-overlapping scan patterns to simply fill in the data gaps with only a few seconds of scanning – even when stationary.
The field-of-view of the scanner can be customized at time of ordering if desired. A variety of standard scan patterns for different types of applications are user selectable in the OPAL 2.0 software interface, or they can be easily customized to alleviate, for example, shadowing effects in mobile or aerial mapping applications. OPAL-120 versions and specifications
The OPAL-120 series consists of the following three variants:
- OPAL-120SP (Standard Performance)
- OPAL-120HP (High Performance)
- OPAL-120XP(Extreme Performance)
The OPAL-120SP has a range of 400m (at 90% reflectivity) in clear conditions, a 200kHz data acquisition rate, customizable field-of-view up to 120°, moderate obscurant penetration capability (with optional software plugin) equal to roughly twice that of the naked eye, and is the most economical variant in the OPAL-120 series. It is principally targeted at machine automation applications on off-road vehicles or short-range monitoring, survey and mapping applications.
The OPAL-120HP and XP variants deliver increased range (up to 3,000m in clear conditions), and obscurant penetration capability of up to three times that of the naked eye. These variants are targeted at real-time monitoring and longer range mapping applications, or where significant amounts of obscurants are expected.
